Well, the good news is that there is good news to be found in WMUR's latest article about the success of Republican candidates in New Hampshire, but readers have to be willing to look past all the bias.
I will admit that the headline accurately portrays the truth that is told in this article, "Republicans Look Strong in Congressional Poll" (PDF), but the lede and body of this article is heavily biased and unfair.
The lede reads: "The Democratic congressional candidates in New Hampshire may have a lot of work to do if they want to claim victory in November, according to a new poll."
Why is WMUR emphasizing the fact that Democrats are down? That's not the news. The news is that the Republicans are up by wide margins. An explanation of why the Republicans are up is certainly in order, and WMUR does not provide it. It might even go further and explain why Democrats are down, but it doesn't do that either.
Allow me: Republicans are up because they are presenting real solutions to limit the federal government to its constitutional boundaries and allow private citizens and businesses to control more of their own destiny, while the Democrats are ignoring the people who have hired them and are trying to make the federal government into what amounts to a dictatorship.
Further, throughout most of the remainder of the article, WMUR continues to show how Democratic candidates are down--seemingly emphasizing that to Democratic supporters--and then downplays the fact that Republicans are up.
Here are some examples:
1) "Based on 444 likely voters sampled, University of New Hampshire pollster Andy Smith said things aren't looking good for the Democrats."
Things are, however, looking good for Republicans. Why is WMUR emphasizing the opposite?
2) "In the Senate race, most eyes are on Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes versus Republican Kelly Ayotte. The poll shows Hodes with 33 percent support compared to Ayotte's 41 percent."
Again, WMUR is emphasizing Hodes, the loser in this poll. Why isn't this news site emphasizing Ayotte or the other contenders, such as Ovide Lamontagne, who has a much larger grassroots following and support base than Ayotte does.
3) "But Smith said that even more concerning for Democrats is that even though Hodes leads his other contenders, he never breaks 40 percent."
Oh no! Poor Hodesy. C'mon. Is this real journalism? This writer is using the word "But?" Really?!? Is WMUR even trying to pretend to be fair here? "Even more concerning for Democrats"?!? How about, "Even better news for Republicans..." WMUR: This really is sickening reporting!
4) "Smith said incumbent Democrat Carol Shea-Porter has a lot of work to do."
OK, so is WMUR working for Shea-Porter? Because it really seems like it is. Who the hell cares how much work Shea-Porter has to do. That's not journalism. The fact of the matter is that Carol Shea-Porter is a scoundrel who doesn't listen to her constituents. Instead, she listens to Nancy Pelosi. Wouldn't you think telling the truth about this might resonate better with WMUR's viewers, who happen to have that opinion en masse?
It might have been better to say, "Frank Guinta's hard work has seemed to pay off...," and then maybe explain what some of that work is. At least that would be more fair and accurate.
Let me take a stab at it: Frank Guinta is traveling around the first district listening to district one residents and clearly articulating the rationale for his opinions. He is making himself accessible, and he is talking common sense.
At least WMUR was good enough to point out Frank Guinta is up by 10 points: "The candidate with the most name recognition going up against her is former Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta, who leads Shea-Porter 43 to 33 percent."
And for WMUR's sake, it's worth mentioning that the rest of the story was relatively fair, reflecting the winning side before the losing side. That is actually the more regular thing to do, isn't it? But then, WMUR buried all this below all its campaigning for Democrats, so maybe not.
(Oh yeah, and I returned the favor. At least everyone knows this blog represents my opinion.)
